Bethune second graders were thrilled to spend time with a 26 year-old penguin, named Cupid, visiting from the Como Zoo. Cupid was born on Valentine’s Day. He was a hit with the students and the adults! Books about penguins were then given to the students to read together with their Assistance League Reading Buddies in the Literacy+ program.

Literacy+ kicks off in mid-October and ends in mid-May. We have dedicated Reading Buddies who meet each Wednesday morning and read with three students individually for 30 minutes each. Some students are reading chapter books while others have trouble pronouncing or recognizing a simple word. Tools are available to help struggling readers, plus we have members who are quite helpful as former reading specialists.
