Stacks of boxed food for familiesIt’s October and that means our warehouse rooms are filling up with food. Cases of cereal, pasta and rice as well as canned vegetables, fruits, and ready to eat items such as beef stew, chili and soup line the shelves ready to be packed into backpacks and given to families in need at both Lucy Laney and Jenny Lind Schools in Minneapolis.

Food for Kids, an Assistance League community program, will distribute approximately 22,000 pounds of food by delivering 80 backpacks per week for 29 weeks of the school year. Each backpack contains breakfast, lunch and dinner items needed to feed a family of four. Studies have shown that learning is impacted when children are battling hunger. By providing families with nutritious food options to carry them through the weekend, we are helping to ensure that children arrive at school on Monday morning ready to learn.
